US Lawmakers Hail Move to Send COVID Vaccines to India, Other Countries

The Biden Administration on Friday distributed 25 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to India and other countries, as praised by top lawmakers. Senator John Cornyn, Co-Chair of the Senate’s India Caucus, commended the Biden Administration’s focus on getting vaccines to countries in need. In a tweet, Cornyn said that he thinks this is a good opportunity for us to help India find solutions to the current crisis, which he described as dangerous. Cindy Hyde-Smith wrote in a tweet that the United States needs to keep offering extra vaccines to India to help it deal with its COVID-19 crisis, which was announced in February. Hyde-Smith expects that global cooperation is needed in order to end the pandemic.

Representative Dwight Evans said he supports Biden’s proposal to send vaccines to India and other countries. The Congresswoman from Houston, Sheila Jackson Lee, who was recently engaged in discussions with the Indian-American community in Houston regarding the COVID-19 conditions in India, commended Biden’s actions. Representative Nielsen requested that Biden expedite the shipment of vaccines and medical equipment to India, including granting any waivers that had been delayed under the last administration. Friend and strategic partner, India is important to us. I urge the Biden Administration to take advantage of the fact that India provided assistance to the United States during last year’s influenza pandemic to send surplus vaccines and supplies to India in response to the devastation caused by COVID-19 in that country, Jackson-Lee said.

Our thanks again go to our local Indian American leaders, who have delivered vaccines to us already! According to her, the statement is true. Congressional member Brian Fitzpatrick, an Indian-American member, called on President Biden to take the necessary steps to combat the deadly COVID-19 outbreak in India. In order to control this virus across the globe, he said, we need surplus vaccines and medical supplies.
