Reports state that the US has reached an agreement with Pfizer to purchase 500 million doses of its Coronavirus vaccine, as the centerpiece of Joe Biden’s effort to vaccinate the world against Coronavirus-19. In Biden’s plan, which the US is expected to announce on Thursday in the UK, vaccinations will be provided at cost. There will be 200m doses distributed in 2016, and 300m in 2017.
92 lower-income countries and the African Union will receive the vaccines through Covax, a global initiative to assist developing countries in fighting the pandemic. Multiple unnamed sources familiar with the plan were cited by the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal. He believes Trump’s four years in office and China and Russia’s increasingly assertive foreign policies have eroded America’s global influence and soft power. Through the global vaccine initiative, Biden will restore America’s global influence and soft power.
Albert Bourla, Pfizer’s CEO, will attend the announcement in Britain but has not commented on the reports. At the RAF Mildenhall airbase, where Air Force One landed, Vice President Biden spoke to US troops Wednesday evening. General plans for vaccine diplomacy were outlined, but no details were provided.
G7 summit next week in Cornwall, NATO summit next week, and EU summit this week will offer a strong bulwark against unilateralism in the world, according to the president. We will be discussing ways to ensure that vaccines are distributed so that they are distributed fairly worldwide over the weekend.
Many of the world’s poorer countries have barely started vaccinating their populations at a time when more than 40% of Americans and Britons are fully vaccinated. There have yet been no vaccines administered in Haiti, and such shipments are not scheduled to arrive until next week. The prime minister of the G7 country, Boris Johnson, has called on leaders of the G7 to commit to immunizing the entire planet by 2022.
