Nevertheless, I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou are fallen, and repent, and do the first work; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent Rev.2:4,5
The light of an Ekklesia is Christ. We bear his image and share his divine life through the Spirit as new creations. The Lord holds his people responsible for continuing in the grace of God, keeping them selves in the love of God. Our life is to be Christ living himself through his body and ourselves dead unto sin but alive unto God. We are to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy, acceptable unto God.
As we have received Christ Jesus the Lord so walk ye in him, rooted and built up in him. Yet in the Ekklesia of Ephesus Jesus puts his finger of their love loss. “ I have somewhat against thee.” Instead of the steady current of their heavenly affection and devotion to him it has waxed cold. They have found another love. He goes to the root of what was occurring among them.
He pulls back the curtain of their hearts. What will you allow to take away HIS supreme place. What captures your heart other than Jesus Christ, business, pleasure, and fame? The solution is given, remember from where thou art fallen and repent. Go back in your mind to your beginning.
Go back to that place of tender mercies and loving kindness. That place where you were crazy in love with Jesus Christ. Your love has grown cold and he feels it but you don’t. What a cold and frightening place to be. Jesus demands our affection as our redeemer, savior and God. He is worthy of our lives as HIS people living out our lives from a heart of worship and thanks giving.
The response is to be done quickly. No time to procrastinate. He gives his solemn warning that unless they repent and do their first works, the light of the candlestick will be removed. The entire history of the Ekklesia is described in this passage. Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men Isaiah 29:13.
Even if other will not return to Christ will you? Will you set your face once again to Him remembering what he has done for you? Will you do it today? Don’t let him wait any more.
