Characteristics of Spiritual Leaders

There are so many leaders, though they may claim membership in some organization or institution that calls itself religious, are not necessarily part of the body of Christ. The Bible does not depict any of them as such. It portrays many religious leaders as teachers who go about preaching the gospel to people who are not genuinely saved. It portrays them as being self-righteous and full of fear and distrust.

It is through the obedient witness of spiritual leaders that we get access to the presence of God, for He is greater than we are and His kingdom is always nearer than our own thought (Psalm 37:3). To have this kind of leadership is to live from example, to lead from the strength of the Holy Spirit and the perfect Word of God. Spiritual leaders who are committed to their vision and mission are always growing in their walk with Christ.

When spiritual leaders are growing in their walk with Christ, they will exhibit great patience, humility, and sorrow for what their fellow members have lost or neglected. They will be nurturing and encouraging and will seek to understand the motives and reasons of those who do things which are contrary to what the scriptures say should be done. They will try to bring people back to the right path by showing them how to go about it. They are great spiritual leaders and will assist their members in every way possible. Their members will enjoy their service and will be more likely to remain and commit to their spiritual leaders. Those who do not move on towards spiritual maturity will also be able to benefit from the leadership and the example set by the Christ like and mature spiritual leaders.
