Brain Scans

Question : Can Brain Scans Unlock the Mystery of Learning Disabilities?
Answer: No, not completely.

While brain scans easily fit into the modern repertoire of diagnostic tools for physicians, they do not seem to pinpoint any specific problem or solution to the problem they do as I stated provide an additional tool other than the traditional clinical diagnosis. I will also address another tool that could be used in the arsenal of diagnostic tools that physicians currently have access to.

Doctors frequently have trouble making a definitive LD or ADHD diagnosis. Maybe the symptoms don’t precisely fit the profile of LD or ADD. Maybe mood swings and anxiety muddy the picture. When the diagnosis is iffy, a handful of LD and ADD doctors have begun offering high-tech (and high-cost) diagnostic tests – notably a technique known as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG), which measures brain wave activity. (2006, Attitude magazine internet article ). Now the real debate begins, do Brain Scans actually help to unlock the mystery of learning disorders ( LD)? “Neuro-imaging doesn’t give you a diagnosis,” says Dr. Amen. “It’s one part of a full evaluation that you have to put in the context of what goes on in a patient’s life.” But by providing information that is impossible to obtain from a simple clinical examination, Dr. Amen claims, “SPECT adds to the richness of the diagnosis and helps target treatment.” The images are useful in a range of psychiatric and neurological disorders, not just ADD, he says. There is no definite proof that Brain Scans help to unlock the mystery of LD but there is definite proof that Brain scans do help with diagnosing certain disorders like LD< ADD and ADHD as part of a larger clinical diagnosis.

In a related article by Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, cardiologist and Fox News medical analyst, he suggests that acupuncture has a real basis in surgical procedures. During a visit to China in 1978, cardiologist Doctor Isadore Rosenfeld witnessed open-heart surgery on a patient, anesthetized only with acupuncture. A major operation and the patient was awake! Nothing like it had ever been seen before in the west. Acupuncture, a practice that is over 5000 years old , is used as a simple pain control technique. A technique where needles are inserted to interrupt the nerve pathways that send pain messages to the brain. Today, in China and Taiwan there are over 232,000 traditional Chinese medical doctors practicing acupuncture. In America there are more than 8000 qualified acupuncturists, 16 acupuncture schools and 2 medical schools teaching acupuncture. As a treatment it’s accepted and practiced worldwide. (2010, internet article ).

  1. I enjoyed your article, especially the measures brain wave activity. It will be interesting to find out if Brain Scans actually help to unlock the mystery of learning disorders.
    Thank you, Dr. Chandler.

  2. Mr. Moses,

    Good evening.
Thank you for accessing the Genesis University Blog. I read your comments. I am also curious to see if Brain Scans can help unlock the mystery of learning disorders..
Through modern scientific research and discovery many diseases and formerly undiagnosed medical conditions have been brought into light and now are being routinely and successfully treated. With the mapping of the human DNA the scientific community may be on the verge of genetically modifying predetermined conditions in the human fetus during the embryonic stage of development. This leads to moralistic and ethical concerns which will be addressed in a follow up article.
Thank you for your response. God bless you. Dean Dr. Christopher Chandler
